Read a real ruler down to the sixteenth — the skill the tape measure builds on
The core rule: your measurement can only be as precise as the smallest reliable division on the tool. This ruler's smallest marks are sixteenths of an inch — so "about 7 and a half" isn't good enough once you can see sixteenth marks; read to the mark you can actually see.
Tick height tells you the fraction without reading a label: the tallest marks are whole inches, then halves, quarters, eighths, and the shortest are sixteenths. Once that height pattern clicks, you can read a ruler at a glance instead of counting marks one at a time.

The problem: the very end of a tape measure (the metal hook) wears down over years of use, so measuring from "0" can be off by a hair on an old tape.

The trick: start your measurement at the 10-inch mark instead of 0, measure to the far edge, then subtract 10 inches from the reading. The middle of the tape never wears out, so this sidesteps hook wear entirely — and it's a real habit working carpenters use, not just a classroom trick.
