WEIGHTS & MEASURES

Reading a real tool correctly is its own skill, separate from the math behind it — a tape measure, a protractor, a caliper all fail you the same way if you can't actually read the marks. Start here to build tool literacy: what to reach for, how precise it actually is, and how to read it without guessing.

📏

RULER SIMULATOR

fractional inches · precision · smallest division

Read a real ruler down to the sixteenth of an inch. Learn why tick height tells you the fraction at a glance, then practice reading and placing real measurements — graded exactly, no partial credit for "close enough."

PROTRACTOR SIMULATOR

degrees · radians · where π actually comes from

Read and place angles on a real protractor — and see the radian value sitting right behind every degree reading. Ties directly back to Calculator Explorer's π key instead of teaching π as a second, unrelated fact.

ARCHITECT'S SCALE

six edges · eleven ratios · the reversed first foot

The real triangular drafting tool — three faces, six edges, eleven scale ratios from 3/32" to 3" per foot. Teaches the two skills that trip people up: picking the correct edge for a stated drawing scale, and reading the reversed-inch stub that sits to the left of zero on every edge.

WEATHER SPOTTERS

temperature · pressure · reading real instruments

Guess tomorrow's weather, then check how close you got — thermometers and pressure readings are measurement tools same as a ruler or a caliper. Locked as a genuine Weights & Measures module (not just a redirected card) — its progress now counts toward this hub same as Ruler and Protractor.

SCALE SIMULATOR

digital · dial · balance beam · kg next to lb/oz

Three weighing mechanisms in one module — a digital load-cell readout, a spring-driven dial with dual kg/lb rings on one needle, and a balance beam you sum by hand. Digital tests real conversion since there's nothing else to read; Dial and Balance test the physical reading skill with metric shown alongside for exposure.

TAPE MEASURE SIMULATOR

roadmap · flagship tool · not yet built

The flagship of this category — drag-to-length, offset measuring, the carpenter's 10-inch trick. Needs real drag interaction, not just click-to-place, so it's being built after Ruler Simulator proves the reading pattern out, not before.

CALIPER SIMULATOR

roadmap · not yet built

Outside, inside, depth, and step measurement — the same tool reading four different features depending on which jaws you use. Digital, dial, and vernier variants planned.

MICROMETER SIMULATOR

roadmap · not yet built

Sleeve and thimble reading, with a digital readout available as a checking aid — not a replacement for learning to read the mechanical scale itself.

Ruler Simulator and Protractor Simulator are both content-complete prototypes reusing Calculator Explorer's Learn/Practice chassis — mode toggle, tap-to-explain, real grading engines. Both engines (the ruler's fraction parser, the protractor's degree/π-fraction formatter) were unit-tested standalone against known values before being wired into the UI, the same discipline Calculator Explorer's expression parser and Punctuation Explorer's answer bank used. Neither is wired to hil-shell.js or session-logger.js yet — same gap Punctuation Explorer had before this session, and the same porting work: mechanical at this point, not a design question. Scale Rule Simulator from the original proposal isn't on this roadmap yet — it teaches a genuinely different skill (reading a scaled drawing, not a physical tool) and deserves its own scoping pass rather than being assumed into this list.

Weather Spotters categorization — LOCKED: it's a genuine Weights & Measures module (a thermometer/ pressure reading is the same reading-a-real-instrument skill as a ruler or caliper), not just a card that happens to link here. It's now included in WM_MODULE_IDS below, so its progress counts toward this hub the same as Ruler and Protractor. Two things this does NOT resolve, left exactly as open as before: (1) the moduleId string used below is a best guess from filename convention (hil-weather-spotters) — unconfirmed against Weather Spotters' own actual MODULE_MANIFEST.moduleId, verify before trusting the progress count; (2) whether its badges (weather-watcher, junior-meteorologist, still defined in hil-guild.html's catalog) get re-categorized as Weights & Measures badges is a separate question this comment doesn't answer — say the word if you want that folded in too.
